ASEP (After School Enrichment Program )Distance Learning

The After School Enrichment Program is coordinated by Olinda PTA volunteers, with the goal of enriching the educational experience for Olinda students.  Professional vendors and community volunteers host a selection of classes held conveniently after school on the Olinda campus.

Olinda PTA does not raise funds from this program, but actually subsidizes the cost of classes, in order to make them more affordable for our families. We hope all students will find something of interest in the variety of classes!

FALL 2020 UPDATE: We will not be hosting an on-campus ASEP program this fall, however several of our community members and vendors from previous years have developed an online curriculum that your student can participate in virtually. We encourage you to continue supporting our vendors and volunteers until we are able to welcome them back on campus! 
 Our volunteer instructors’ classes can be purchased here starting 9/14. See class descriptions below.

WATERCOLOR CRAFTS

Everything in the photo will be included plus more tools and supplies! Colors may vary. Artists as young as 4 years old can do these projects with adult supervision. A tablecloth, newspaper or towel is recommended to protect the workspace. Pre-recorded lessons will be available plus Zoom appointments if needed.

This class will dive into several crafts using watercolors! We will also discuss watercolor techniques. Of course, watercolor paper will be included as well as a paper chain, a wooden bead necklace with your child’s name, a special cat mask and a pocket doll. The pocket doll can be customized by the artist to either wear a vest, a dress, a cape or a kimono.  The cat mask has an elasticized band and looks amazing once it’s painted with watercolors and adorned with sequins.

CRAFTING RAINBOWS

The ever popular class is back as a kit! A wooden rainbow, a ribbon & yarn wall hanging, a collage paper lantern, a key fob and an activity/art journal book will be included. Artists will use their imagination and hands to make each day a little more colorful. The activity/art journal book will explore different ideas such as what does ROY G BIV mean, how to make a rainbow fortune teller and how to make a flower rainbow.

CRAFTING UNICORNS

What’s your unicorn name? We’ll discover it when you take this class! Each kit will include a unicorn collage, a playscape with homemade play dough, a flower crown, an articulated paper unicorn plus a surprise DIY.  Although play dough will be provided, the recipe will be included so you can replicate it later.  Using the play dough in the playscape will be a sensory exercise as the artist will smash, poke and knead a unicorn nest or home for the unicorn then decorate it.

Does your child believe in Fairies, Mermaids, Elves & Gnomes? If so, we have a magical workshop they would love! Inspired by Alice Wong of  Wands & Willows and her beautiful creations, we’ll be using floral petals, wood beads, embroidery floss, yarn, pipe cleaners, pinecones, felt, and ribbons to create a total of 6 unique doll projects (Princess Fairy, Autumn Fairy, Mermaid, Pinecone Elf, Winter fairy & Pinecone Gnome.) Each student will choose from different colors schemes.
This course will also feature 2 weeks of card making workshops. Students will learn to use the basics of layering to make multi-dimensional cards (2 -3 cards per session, Each kit will be unique.)
Equipment needed: Scissors, Color Pencils or markers, Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue sticks.  If your child is too young to handle a hot glue gun, a craft glue option will be provided.

The instructor for this class will be Olinda parent and crafting aficionado, Mona Chin.

SUCCULENT CRAFTING WORKSHOPS WITH MONA

Succulents are hardy and low maintenance and require a minimum amount of water. This lends them to being a great option to craft with. The range of color, shapes, and texture makes them perfect for decorating almost anything.  Just provide ample light and they will reward you for years.   

Each of these 3 single-session workshops will be sold individually and taught over Zoom by Olinda parent and succulent pro, Mona Chin.

Do you want to create a Fairy garden where fairies, gnomes and magical creatures can live and roam around in?  Kids will choose their fairy accessories and we will landscape, create pebble paths to create a fantasy fairy garden.  Each kit will include a pot, dirt, succulents, rocks and pebbles, and fairy accessories. Equipment Needed: A chopstick and plastic spoon.

2. Mini Succulent Pumpkin – 10/22, 3:00-3:45 PM, Sign up by 10/10 ($15)


Autumn is upon us! Make a festive decorative succulent pumpkin to welcome in the Fall.  We will go step by step to decorate the top of mini pumpkin with succulent cuttings.  The succulent pumpkin will last all the way through Thanksgiving.  Succulents can be transplanted into the ground to create a mini succulent garden.  Equipment needed: Hot glue gun and glue sticks (Parental supervision needed for younger kids) or craft glue (available for sale.)

The Holidays are here.  Kids can make a cute mini holiday succulent wreath to decorate your home.   We’ll go step by step to decorate the wreath with succulent cuttings, color moss, and red berries and other festive accessories. Equipment needed: Hot glue gun and glue sticks (Parental supervision needed for younger kids) or craft glue (available for sale.)
