Art – Ms. Lori

Art instructor and Olinda mom, Lori Thompson will be providing 8 weeks of art instruction to all grades. The focus will be on Process Art, which is about the fun of creation, not the final product.

Lori Thompson holds BAs in fine arts and criminal justice from Indiana University. She worked as a professional photojournalist for over a decade, shooting photos of public officials, activists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Since 1998, Lori has facilitated art and crafts workshops for adults and youth in San Francisco and the East Bay. When working with young people, she reminds them that they are practicing making marks, not practicing erasing. In 2020, Lori will also teach at Madera Elementary ASEP and El Cerrito Rec Center.

Her favorite art museum is The Broad in LA. When she is not in her studio, you can find her at the BMX track with her family or traveling.

Art – MOCHA

We are excited to partner with the Oakland Museum of Children’s Art to bring 6 weeks of art classes to every classroom at Olinda this year. Teaching artist, Kaya Fortune, engages the students in the creative process with age appropriate activities that support common core art standards. Click Here for more information

Music – MUST

Music in Schools Today is a non-profit organization that supports and develops music education programs that increase student achievement. Their 8 week program will be provided for grades TK-3 starting in the spring. Click here for more information.

P.E. – Playworks

Playworks is an organization that helps kids to stay active and build valuable life skills through play. Their on-site coach, coach Brandon, will be at Olinda 2 weeks per month, teaching conflict resolution & leadership skills to our students through Physical Education. Click here for more information.

Spelling Bee

A fun way to motivate kids to learn their spelling words! Grade-appropriate spelling lists will be sent home before winter break. Winners of the class bees progress to the school-wide bee, and from there have the opportunity to work their way up to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Volunteers needed!
